Epson is getting SMART!!  There is a hidden sensor (RFID tag) on the newer Artisan 800 and 810 that detects if the scanner bed is closed or open.  They don't use the normal 'push-down trigger' anymore.  I'm not sure if they use this method for the Artisan 700 or 710 models.  Here is a great video to show you how to trick your printer to think the lid is closed.  Thanks for the tip George!
